Race weekends are HUGE events!!
In fact, I would be willing to bet each NICA WI League race weekend is a larger sporting event than any other middle or high school sporting championship event and we do this for 7 out of 8 weekends in a row!!
▪ Nearly 1800 athletes
▪ Nearly 900 coaches
▪ 80 teams
▪ 4-5 miles of course to mark
▪ 28 race waves
▪ 6 hours of racing
▪ Hundreds of tents and campers
▪ Hundreds of cars
▪ Food Vendors
▪ Sponsor tents
▪ Pre-rides
▪ Bike Mechanics
▪ Singers and musicians
▪ more noise makers and costumes than you can count

All this adds up to some serious STOKE and FUN! You WANT, no you NEED to be part of it all!
As a parent, grandparent, caregiver or friend, supporting your student athlete on race day is priority number one but the WI League needs your help too for race weekend to run smoothly.
I got involved years ago as a volunteer with the League by greeting cars as they arrived and making sure parking rows were organized and straight. I love working at the finish line as a number caller, a system we use as a backup to the timing system (just in case). Seeing the faces of accomplishment as athletes come through can put a lump in your throat. Cheering on athletes as a course marshal and communicating via radio if an athlete needs assistance is critical to our safety plan. Helping to set up the start/finish area is a great way to make new friends. Unwrapping and setting up the awards table is very rewarding! The internal joy of knowing you helped contribute to these awesome weekends is a feeling like no other.
None of this requires bike riding skills or bike knowledge – just a willing attitude to help make our race weekends great!
Please consider signing up below to help at each of your athlete’s race weekends. Shifts are generally no longer than 2 hours and are available before and after your athlete’s race.
Questions? Please contact the League’s fantastic Volunteer Coordinator, Allison Carmody, at volunteer@wisconsinmtb.org.
Looking forward to seeing you soon at our season opening race at Telemark!
