NICA is Hope! Share the Ride this Holiday Season

Dear Melissa,

There’s an innate drive and determination in each of us to go further, go faster, learn, teach, coach, care. This drive comes from something so basic and straightforward, yet so strong that it touches everyone in our community daily — Hope. Hope for a fun ride, hope for a podium finish, hope to belong to a fun community, hope to make friends, hope for a future where we are all part of a thriving and engaged cycling community. NICA is HOPE.

Meet Mallory Club; Mallory races with the Virginia League’s New River Valley Composite Team. Mallory has Type 1 Diabetes, a chronic, incurable autoimmune disease. To manage and monitor her disease, she wears a tandem insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Mallory has to constantly manage and monitor her glucose levels. If they drop too low, too quickly, she has to immediately stop riding, get sugar in her system, and wait at least 10 minutes for the sugar to stabilize her glucose levels. This has the potential to be extremely challenging during races, but Mallory tackles it head-on with a smile. She does not let her disease get in the way of her love for mountain biking.

This season, while managing her Type 1 Diabetes, AND racing with her insulin pump and glucose monitor – Mallory finished in the top 3 of her category each race this season. Furthermore, she finished the season winning the race series in the Leaders Jersey. NICA is hope for Mallory and other student-athletes who may also be managing health challenges and can learn from, and be inspired by, Mallory’s grit, determination, and success.
