Dear Team NICA –
There is a lot to CELEBRATE this month. On behalf of all of NICA – CONGRATULATIONS to all of the NICA Seniors graduating in 2021! We are incredibly proud of you and grateful for your dedication and involvement with our community. You’ll have an opportunity later on to meet some of our outstanding NICA Seniors.
We recognize the hard work our Spring Leagues put into adhering to their local health department guidelines to ensure that all NICA events went off safely but also continued to provide fun, inclusive and welcoming opportunities for our student-athletes. Thank you and congratulations to all the student-athletes, coaches, parents, volunteers and especially league race staff!
This month NICA is also excited to welcome three new staff members to the National Team. We welcome Chris Mileski, Vice President of Field Operations, Xavier Melendez, Director of Brand and Marketing, and Phil Hynes, Coach Licensing Manager. Chris and Phil both come from our League Director ranks and Xavier did a significant amount of consulting with us during 2020 so all three are familiar with NICA’s mission, organization and people. These new hires strengthen our efforts to support our teams, programs and leagues across the country.
Next month, we look forward to celebrating the sport of mountain biking as we will have the opportunity to watch three NICA Alumni compete in the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Kate Courtney from the NorCal League and Haley Batten from the Utah League will be representing the United States of America and Sofia Gomez-Villafane from the NorCal League will be representing Argentina. As you tune in to the Olympics later in July – be sure to cheer on these phenomenal athletes!
Best Regards, Steve

GRiT to Know Your Bike in Kentucky!
Earlier this month the Kentucky League hosted a GRiT to Know Your Bike Camp where over twenty student-athletes and coaches gathered for two days to get their hands dirty and learn how to work on their bikes. The camp was a hands-on event during where participants were taught mechanical bicycle skills by professional female mechanics.

Participants learned how to change flat tires, work on chains, adjust derailleurs, the mechanics of brakes and other important skills including pedal installation. The weekend camp also included plenty of time to play games, design name necklaces, dance at a s’mores disco and make new friends! Many thanks to our friends at the Rapha Foundation for providing NICA a grant that made possible our GRiT To Know Your Bike Camp, as well as many other GRiT events and projects in other NICA leagues around the country.
Be sure to check in with your League’s GRiT Coordinator to see what fun summer GRiT events are planned in your area!
